Diamond's double does the job for Aberdeen

01/18/2009 - Aberdeen, Scotland (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Zander Diamond's second-half double handed Aberdeen a 4-2 win over Celtic at Pittodrie Stadium on Sunday, the Dons first win at home against Celtic since 2001.

Gary McDonald put Aberdeen on top in the 24th minute, but his opener was canceled out one minute later by Scott Brown. Stuart Duff then restored the lead for the hosts in the 31st minute, but a 73rd-minute goal from Scott McDonald had the Hoops back on level terms.

However, Diamond scored twice in the span of three minutes to give his side the win, taking Aberdeen to third in the table.

The loss leaves Celtic just two points clear of second-place Rangers, which beat Falkirk 3-1 on Saturday.

The home side enjoyed the better of the play in the opening 20 minutes and they capitalized with a goal in the 24th as Duff's cross found the head of Gary McDonald, whose looping header made its way over the head of goalkeeper Mark Brown, who was in goal for the injured Artur Boruc.

The response was swift from Celtic as Aiden McGeady beat a defender and found Scott Brown for an easy finish one minute later.

However, Aberdeen was back on top before halftime when a poor clearance from the Celtic defense allowed Duff to tally his first goal for the Dons.

Andreas Hinkel almost had Celtic level in the 61st minute when he sent in a wicked cross that slammed off the crossbar, but Scott McDonald would find the back of the net for Celtic 12 minutes later.

Barry Robson found the Australian international with a cross that he nodded home from close range, but Diamond came back for Aberdeen with a headed goal of his own two minutes later.

Charlie Mulgrew provided the cross that put the Dons in front, and he hooked up with Diamond again in the 78th minute to put the result away.

Motherwell pounded Dundee United 4-0 at Tannadice Park as the club built a three-goal lead at halftime and coasted from there to climb to seventh in the table, while United falls to fourth.
